The Needs of All

 Oct 3, 2023

We all eat, simple as that. Food brings us together. It allows us to be comforted, or reignite an old memory, it allows us to remember we are merely human. Some of my best memories are those in the kitchen, or sitting at a table with a warm meal. Not all meals have to be from Michelin star restaurants, actually, I prefer the ones where we make meals together.

Just yesterday was one of those gloomy days, where all you really want is to be under the covers. I decided to first make sea salt brownies. Brownies are always comforting in a warm way. Also with each ingredient added into the bowl a memory replays in my mind. From baking them in college and going to my crush's dorm only to have all his roommates eat them, to the big pan my aunt used to make when we would stay over for a Sunday dinner. Or when my new neighbors moved in and I wanted them to think we were normal and kind. A brownie is like a weighted blanket, it brings us one bite closer to home. Maybe that's why I made them last night. When you miss home, or that special person, bake or cook and hold onto that feeling.

I also made French Onion Soup, which was a timeless dish my mom would make on rainy days or when the air became a little more crisp and cool. It was amazing how lovely it turned out, the first taste brought me back to those Christmas Eve nights. Where we would all gather around the table enjoying one's company. For a moment I got to see my grandma one more time and hear her sing O Silent Night.

Food is magical, it brings us moments, it gives us energy and at other times it allows us to share a time to create and simply enjoy the gift of life.
